Teachers at three magnet schools (Kershaw, LaSalle II, and Mayer) were featured recently in a Chicago Tribune article and on WBEZ’s “848” program. Thirty teachers from the three schools participated in a series of workshops across the city hosted by cultural institutions representing Chicago’s Arab, Chinese, Indian and Mexican communities. The teachers came away with exciting new ideas to expose their students to these cultures this fall. Kershaw and Mayer, which are International Baccalaureate schools, offer Mandarin (Kershaw) and Spanish (Mayer) as world languages. LaSalle II, a World Language Magnet School, offers Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, and Urdu. The teacher professional development activities were supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which includes five of Chicago’s magnet schools.
